Gir National Park

“The land of Asiatic Lions”

The only site in the world where the Asiatic lion may presently- found is in Gir National Park, one of the best parks in India to witness animals. Thanks to conservation efforts, their numbers have been increasing. Gir is the largest dry deciduous forest in western India. The Sanctuary is a part of Kathiawar. There is closure of Gir National Park from 16 June to 15 October every year. The best time for wildlife spotting is April and May. While Devalia Safari Park is open throughout the year.

The official count said that there were 411 lions in 2010. Also, there are roughly 2375 species of fauna here with 38 species of mammals, over 300 species of birds, 37 species of reptiles and over 2000 species of insects. Other important wildlife forms found here are leopard, chausingha, spotted deer, hyena, sambar deer and chinkara. 

Somnath

“The town of the Lord of the Moon”

Somnath, literally meaning ‘lord of the moon’ is a pilgrim centre. And is home to one of the 12 Jyotirlingas (shrines of Lord Shiva, where he’s worshipped as a linga of light). The celebration of Maha Shivratriin a big way there in February or March. A colourful religious fair- every year on Kartik Purnima complete with small children dressed up as Lord Shiva and plenty of bhaang. Somnath also offers beaches, museums and other attractions. While the Somnath temple and Somnath beach are the primary places to visit in Somnath– Gita Mandir, Balukha Tirtha, Kamnath Mahadev Temple, Somnath Museum are some of the other places that one can visit.

Somnath Mahadev Fair which is held on Kartik Purnima and Maha Shivaratri- are the two major festivals celebrated in Somnath with great pomp and fervour. The temple town witnesses a huge number of tourists from various parts of the country during these festivals.

The world’s tallest statue, dedicated to Indian independence activist Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (1875–1950), completed in 2018. At 182 metres tall, it’s twice the size of the Statue of Liberty. Dwarka

Dwarka is popularly known as the ‘home of Lord Krishna’ and is believed to have been the first capital of Gujarat. Known as Devbhoomi Dwarka. One of the four most sacred Char Dham Hindu pilgrimage sites and seven most ancient Sapta Puri religious cities in India. Dwarka was a part of the ancient kingdom of Krishna and Nageshwar Jyotirlinga Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, is also located in Dwarka. The Krishna Janmashtami festival is a major event there.
