Understanding the GRE Exam – What is the GRE test?
Graduate Record Examination GRE known Worldwide, GRE tests are administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS).
Since 1936, educational institutions around the world have been using theGRE to ensure that; students with the right qualifications get seats for the desired course where they want to study.
The GRE is not a mandatory requirement for every college or university. However, if you are planning to study abroad, especially in the US, an educational institution will demand GRD test scores along with your admit card.
There are two unique sorts of GRE tests: General and Subject. Most educational institutions will require a score on either of these two GRE tests.
However, you may have to submit a GRE general score as well as a GRE subject in exceptional cases, seeking admission to highly specialized courses.
Now let us see how the GRE test differs from the GRE subject test.
Difference between GRE General and GRE Subject.
There are five major differences between GRE General and GRE subject tests. Let me explain these briefly so that you can prepare better for the GRE exam you want to apply for.
S.no | GRE General | GRE Subject |
1 | Required while applying for graduate or post graduate Studies. | Required only when applying for highly specialized courses. |

5 | Fees stated in $ – effective from 01,july 2021. India: $ 231.30 | Fees stated in $ – effective from 01,july 2021. It cost $150 worldwide. |
These five contrasts make it clear that you have to plan for the two kinds of GRE tests in various manners.
GRE General Exam Preparation
The first thing to remember is that- Passing a GRE test prep is not as easy as it looks. Instead, you have to put extra effort with great seriousness to crack the GRE General Test and score high. This is because every college and university requires a minimum score to apply.
Meaningfully, if you earn less than the prescribed marks from a college or university, then your application for admission also does not come for consideration.
This automatically gives away an excellent opportunity to study at some of the respected seats of learning. This affects your entire career and without exaggeration your whole life is getting affected.
Follow these simple tips for preparing for GRE General Test:-
1. Know where you stand –
Here is my first suggestion for preparing for GRE General: Find exactly where you stand. As I explained earlier, GRE General consists of three tests: Qualitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, and analytical reasoning. These are skills that you cannot actually acquire by reading textbooks or study material.
Makes sense, there are lots of books and online courses available that teach you how to crack these three tests.
However, in my opinion, the best way to pass these tests is by using your own skills and fixing them with lots of studies from the available material.
The best way to start your GRE general journey is to try some of the free online mock tests available, without having to read some books or gre study material. Rely on your own reasoning skills to crack these mock tests. Each of these mock tests gives you a score.
Use this simple guide to know where you are standing. Because every college and university have different minimum GRE scores. And if you are falling short of this minimum score, find areas where you can do better.
2. Fix Your Goal Score
Figuring out where you can do better is very important because it automatically guides you to the second step: fixing your target score. Obviously, you have three to five colleges and universities where you want admission for undergraduate or postgraduate courses.
Find out what the minimum GRE normal score is for admission to the colleges and universities of your choice.
As I stated earlier, each academic institution has its own parameters for the GRE General’s score for accepting students. You can easily find these minimum score requirements by checking the websites of these colleges and universities.
As the familiar axiom goes: Always focus on the moon. Meaning, once you are aware of the minimum GRE General Score requirement, aim to score more. This improves your overall chances of getting admission in the educational institution of your choice.
3. Identify Your Gray Areas
Now when you know the difference between the marks obtained without preparing for the GRE test and; minimum GRE score to get admission in your chosen college or university, things get easier.
The next step is to identify your gray areas carefully. This is quite easy because you had already taken the mock test and got the previously suggested scores in this article. Mock test results will clearly indicate your strong points and gray areas.
Once you have a list of these gray areas, make a complete plan to patch them. This is not as difficult as you might believe incorrectly. The score will show you clearly where you have logged in as well as strong areas.
Focus on making your strong areas stronger. Most GRE general applicants fail to do something like this. They believe that they are strong in certain areas and ignore them, focusing on the weak. This is the wrong way of preparing for GRE general tests. When you reinforce your already strong points, you are actually aiming for a higher score rather than just aiming for a minimum score.
At the same time, be prepared to work very hard to cover the gray areas where you can certainly do a lot better.
4. Define your approach to the test
The GRE General requires a specific approach. That means, you have to decide for yourself, the way you handle and answer every question and test.
Here is some important information: Each part of the GRE General subject requires a completely different approach. You cannot have a fixed mindset to answer every question and challenge.
There is a lot of study material available from ETS. These are the official product and publication or authority of ETS that conduct GRE general testing.
They have superb practice sessions that will provide deep insights to tackle analytical, quantitative and verbal tests for GRE.
Apart from this, you can also pay as well as download some free resources from the official ETS website. I recommend you to go for all these free resources initially and later, if necessary, go for paid ones.
5. Online or Offline
Most of the GRE General candidates opt for the online examination. Therefore, focus your energy on cracking the online version. Unless, of course, there are online tests in your area or you have specific reasons for choosing offline ones.
It is very easy to make fun of online tests and practice them daily. Although ETS is official, there are some great mock GRE tests available from other providers. When you use a combination of both, you are better prepared for the GRE General because you will also learn different approaches.
6. Increase GRE vocabulary
And finally prepare for the GRE exam by improving your vocabulary in line with ETS and university standards. There is no shortage of free online study material that will help you learn complex grammar and; other skills that hold the key to improving your GRE general vocabulary.
I am stressing the GRE General terminology as this is the part where most of the candidates thrived and failed. In fact, the vocabulary part is not difficult. Unfortunately, most candidates lose out on this account due to overconfidence.
Nowadays, coaching classes provide free English speaking courses online to improve vocabulary and develop an approach to crack GRE General are also available. I have no personal view of these classes.
If you like going to coaching classes, then look for people with a great track record in your field. It usually advertises its high scorer students. But, stay away from the prolonged claims made by these coaching classes.
Preparation for GRE subject
From above you know how to crack the GRE General Test, from here you know how to prepare for GRE subject.
Follow the same steps as GRE General test
The steps that I have described above for GRE General are the ones you have to follow for the GRE subject test as well.
However, you can skip the vocabulary part of GRE General Preparations. Also, you will need a different approach to pass the GRE subject exam.
Download free GRE theme resources
Once you follow these steps, the next thing is to download the relevant free study material from the ETS subject testing organization ETS. To pass the GRE subject examination, you can register online in a very prestigious coaching class.
Take a free gre practice test
Many free GRE topics are available online. The best way to prepare for the GRE subject is to take many of them to your chosen subject. According to GRE test experts, the GRE subject may be more difficult than the GRE general. Thus, The more you try, the better result you will get.
