What is an interview?

The word interview originated from the French word entrevue. The term “interview” is an easy definition of a formal meeting between two people – Interviewer and interviewee.

1. Traditional Interview: 

It is the most common type of interview where candidates sit and answer interviewer questions. Designed to figure out the best in a candidate. The length of interview is usually from a half hour to one and a half hours. You are usually asking many of the questions from the Common Interview Questions related to your education skills and experience, the interviewer usually proceeds to assess your subject matter expertise.

The interviewer can be the employer, manager, someone from the HR department or a third-party recruitment consultant hired by the company. The interview usually takes place on the company premises. 2. Panel Interview

Panel interview definition – As the name suggests, the interview is taken by a group of people or a panel types of interviewers. Or a conversation with two or more members of a hiring team. The panel may include personnels from different departments. It might include a supervisor, a human resources representative (HR manager) or other decision-makers. whats a panel interview format? In a panel interview, each member has an opportunity to ask you questions about your experience, qualifications and goals. 3. Regular Interview

You cannot put a regular interview in a unique category. It is a normal interview type. It consists of a chief officer or a department head or a senior officer present at that time; who represents the human resources department. But in some circumstances only one interviewer can take your interview. These seemingly simple interviews can sometimes indicate difficulty.

There is pressure to shortlist a sole interveiwer and recruit the best talent. And that too to measure their skills within a very short period of time. If you have to face questions like the questions asked by your competitor, then it means that both of you have come to participate in this interview to get the same position. Asking any candidate coming from the interview how their interview was can show your nervousness.

4. Walk-in Interview

A walk-in interview is like an informal meet-and-greet session that is arranged by companies for interviewing a bunch of people in a short time. Companies generally have walk-in interviews when they are planning to recruit a number of people at the same time, or at career fairs. Often this type of interviews takes 5 to 10 minutes due to lack of time. If you succeed in a walk-in interview, chances to appear for a second formal interview increases. 

5. Telephone Interview 

Telephone interviews are often conducted interviews by employers in the initial interviews round of the hiring process; this type of interview allows an employer to screen candidates on the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and salary expectations pertaining to the position and the company. The telephone interviewer jobs save the employers’ time and eliminates candidates that are unlikely to meet the company’s expectations.

6. Video conferencing

With the increase in social, mobile and cloud technology there is a huge increase in video recruitment. Video conferencing is a methods of interview where candidates connect with companies with different locations. It minimizes travel expenses, time, record interviews and still meet like human interactions. The interview can be conducted from a desktop at work, a home computer, laptop, smartphone or a tablet. Interviewer may use Skype, google meet or any other app for video conferencing. Do not forget to follow up email after skype interview.

7. Group Interview 

In this type of interview, companies interview several candidates simultaneously. Companies mostly use group interviews when they need to recruit multiple candidates in a short period of time. The interviewer may ask questions to the entire group at a time or may ask each candidate to answer individually. They may ask you to perform in a team in order to assess your communication, interpersonal and teamwork skills.

8. Puzzle Interview 

As the name suggests, Puzzle means to solve questions using tricks, Google and other highly competitive companies have been known to ask “puzzle” questions, like, how many peoples use instagram in india at 1:30 AM on saturday? These types of questions help interviewers to determine – how quickly a fresher can answer?  This helps managers to make decisions and judgement for a candidate.

9. Career-fair Interview

Career fairs are the most common type of interview of college students, who are in search of jobs. These types of interviews are organized at a career fair job hunt. These interviews usually last for 5-10 minutes to present yourself to the recruiter. And get a chance to enter the second level of interview.

10. Lunch Interview

Such interviews are organized for the higher positions of the company. Getting these types of job interviews is not less than getting a job. These interviews take place at breakfast, lunch or dinner. Because the senior officer does not like to meet in the office of his rival company. Eating together at some luxurious hotels is different though.

Only the top boss or two will participate in such interviews. This is done to understand you personally and identify you properly. All the questions in this are focused on your family background, experience and educational qualifications and these types of questions will be informal.

Usually these proposals will be prepared for you by the higher officer. And if you meet their expectations then you can expect this offer.

Suggestion: Meet the top executives in the hotel lobby instead of at the table. Never make these top executives wait, as they make a bad impression. And learn better table manners, including proper use of cutlery.
