Ariyaman Beach, Rameshwaram

Adam’s Bridge, also known as Rama Setu, connects Sri Lanka’s northwest coast to India’s Rameshwaram island.  It is a chain of limestone shoals starting from Dhanushkodi tip of India’s Pamban Island. A 2 km long bridge connects India’s mainland to Pamban Island. In order to reach Sri Lanka and save his wife Sita from Ravana, Lord Rama and his monkey allies built a floating bridge. As a result, Adam’s Bridge is known as Ram Sethu Bridge by Indians. It is also known by the name of Nala Setu as Nala, the son of Lord Vishwakarma was the architect of this Bridge.

Arichamunai Bird Sanctuary, near Dhanushkodi, is closest to Ramasharam. Go from December to March, and you may be lucky enough to see flamingos that have flown all the way from Australia. Chitrangudi and Kanjirankulam sanctuaries are also worth visiting on the mainland. They’re both situated near Mudukulathur in the Ramanathapuram district of Tamil Nadu, a couple of hours from Rameshwaram.
